On June 26, 2020, the Washington State Building Code Council (SBCC) voted 8 to 3 to extend the implementation date of the 2018 construction code from November 1, 2020 to February 1, 2021. The SBCC previously voted to extend the implementation date from July 1, 2020 to November 1, 2020. The main reasons for the delays are the impacts of COVID-19 and concerns about training and staff capacity in local jurisdictions.
The City of Seattle has separate authority, but it is anticipated that Seattle will align the effective date of their codes with the State.
