Highlights
Our firm approach seeks to ensure that our clients' interests are advanced,
while also being responsive to issues identified by regulatory agencies
and other interested parties. This approach has allowed us to successfully
permit some of the most complex projects in the Seattle area. My professional
highlights include the following:
Active
involvement in recent amendments to Seattle's Downtown Plan
Land
use counsel for the construction of the state convention center over I-5
in Seattle and the subsequent convention center expansion project, which
included an exhibit hall, an office building, the Elliott Hotel and public
atrium beneath a glass canopy arching over Pike Street. The projects involved
City departmental approvals, Hearing Examiner hearings, City Council approvals,
street vacations, conditional uses, rezoning, and transferable development
rights agreements.
Land
use counsel to the University of Washington in the development of its
downtown Metropolitan Tract.
Land
use counsel to the University of Washington in the development of its
master plans (1990-2000, 2001-2010), which approved an unprecedented building
program for new science and bio-tech facilities on its main campus.
Represented
the University of Washington on negotiations of a Memorandum of Agreement
with Sound Transit, specifying the terms for light rail facilities on
campus.

Permitted
the redevelopment of Seattle's Union Station for over one million square
feet of office space.
Permitted
the Pacific Place retail complex in downtown Seattle and advised the developer
on the issues pertaining to the redevelopment of three square blocks in
downtown Seattle for retail, office, telecommunications and housing uses.
Represented
the state's largest sand and gravel operator in permitting a new mineral
extraction and shipping facility in DuPont, Washington. The project involved
shoreline rezoning, state and federal permits for a new dock facility,
and negotiation of a successful settlement with numerous environmental
organizations.
Representing Coca-Cola in connection with its facility in Bellevue, Washington.
Represented
the Federal Reserve Bank in connection with new facilities.
Represented Tarragon in development of warehouse facilities in southwest
Washington.
Represented Nitze-Stagen in connection with remodel projects at SODO Center
to accommodate Starbucks.
Defended several local governments against challenges to their comprehensive
plans under the Growth Management Act.
Recognized
in 2006 as one of the "Best Lawyers in Seattle" in Seattle
Metropolitan magazine (Environmental, Natural Resources and Real Estate
categories).
Listed
in The Best Lawyers in America, 1997-1998, 1999-2000, 2001-2002,
and 2003-2004 editions, Woodward White; Real Estate Law (Land Use) category.
Recognized
in years 1998-2007, as one of the "Super Lawyers" in Washington
by Washington Law & Politics, a local legal and professional
publication. Featured in a cover article in the August/September 2001
edition with my sister, Jenny Durkan. One of the top 50 women vote getters
in the 2003 and 2005 surveys.

I like to spend my leisure time with my family. We enjoy golfing, boating,
