Profile

Since joining HCMP in 1988, I have worked in the areas of land use and environmental law for both private and public entities. My legal expertise is augmented by my years as a senior planner at the City of Seattle Department of Construction and Land Use (now Department of Planning and Development). There, I was responsible for reviewing projects and issuing decisions on all types of land use applications. My prior experience has given me a unique understanding of the government permit process. This directly benefits HCMP clients when it comes to assessing development feasibility and obtaining permits and approvals.

Professional Highlights

Obtaining entitlements for the Washington Mutual - Seattle Art Museum expansion project on the site next to the existing museum. The Seattle Land Use Code needed to be amended to allow this unique partnership to occur, and the City Council unanimously passed our package of amendments.

Worked with Seattle Mariners baseball team to obtain permits and approvals for SAFECO Field. As everyone knows, the schedule for this project was very ambitious and there were many community issues to be addressed. Over three million people a year visit SAFECO Field, and I am proud to have assisted in making this a reality.

Serve as land use counsel to a wide variety of multi-family and commercial developers, throughout Puget Sound.

Co-author of Land Use Petition Act, enacted by the State Legislature to create a simplified and uniform set of rules for appealing local land use decisions to court.

Recognized in years 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 as one of the "Super Lawyers" in Washington by Washington Law & Politics, a local legal and professional publication.
